# What the agent can do

> The tools an Eggent agent has — a terminal, Python with document libraries, the web, files, helpers, images, Telegram, schedules — and what it cannot do.

An Eggent agent is not just someone to talk to. It has a computer of its own (a Linux container), and nearly anything that can be done on a computer without a mouse it does by itself.

## Files and the terminal {#files-terminal}

- **Read, write and edit files** in the project folder: texts, spreadsheets, code, configs.
- **Run commands** in a terminal: `bash`, `git`, `curl`, `jq`, `zip`, `ripgrep` and more.
- **Write and run programs** in Python and Node.js — for calculations, data processing, conversion.

Whatever the agent creates appears in the **Files** panel right away, where you can open or download it.

## Documents {#documents}

The libraries most often needed for documents are installed in advance, so the agent has nothing to install:

| What | With |
| --- | --- |
| Excel (`.xlsx`) — read and create | `openpyxl`, `pandas` |
| Word (`.docx`) | `python-docx` |
| PowerPoint (`.pptx`) | `python-pptx` |
| PDF — text and tables | `pypdf`, `PyPDF2`, `pdfplumber`, `poppler-utils` |
| Images — crop, compress, convert | `Pillow` |
| HTML and XML | `beautifulsoup4`, `lxml` |
| Audio and video | `ffmpeg` |
| Postgres databases | `psycopg2` |

Scans and photos of documents are read with the model's own vision, when the model can look at images.

## The web {#web}

- **Search** the web for a query.
- **Read pages** from a link, including pulling the text out of articles and documentation.
- **Call service APIs** with `curl` or code.

The agent reads pages as text. It has no browser with a screen: it cannot press buttons on a site, sign in to accounts or look at how a page renders.

## Helpers {#subagents}

A big task can be split between **helpers** — separate agents that each take one part and work at the same time. For example, "make three agents: one reads IT news, one medicine, one cars", or visiting twenty sites a few at a time. Up to six helpers run at once.

The agent waits for its helpers: each one reports back, and the agent continues with all of the results and writes the answer in the same reply. While they work, the chat shows every helper on its own row — what it is doing right now, how many steps it has taken and for how long. Open a row to see the task it was given, each search, page and file it went through, and what it found. Stop stops the helpers too.

A helper exists only for the task at hand. For an agent that keeps working on a topic, use a [project](https://eggent.ai/docs/projects.md) with a [schedule](https://eggent.ai/docs/schedules.md). To have a project you already have do a piece of work, write `@` and its name at the start of a message: it works with its own files, skills and instructions and the answer comes back to your chat ([how](https://eggent.ai/docs/projects.md#ask)). Schedules are created through the same mechanism as helpers.

## Images {#images}

The agent can **draw** images from a description and **edit** existing ones: change the background, make a variant, build a cover from a sample. See [Images](https://eggent.ai/docs/images.md).

## Talking to you {#communication}

- **Ask a question** with a card of answer options and a field for your own — when it needs your decision.
- **Write to Telegram** — a message or a file to your chat with the bot, or to a channel where the bot is an admin. See [Telegram](https://eggent.ai/docs/telegram.md).
- **Remember** what matters in [memory](https://eggent.ai/docs/memory.md) and find it later.

## Managing the workspace {#workspace}

When asked in chat, the agent can by itself:

- create a project, switch to another project;
- write a new [skill](https://eggent.ai/docs/skills.md);
- connect an [MCP server](https://eggent.ai/docs/mcp.md);
- create, change or delete a [schedule](https://eggent.ai/docs/schedules.md);
- put work on the [task board](https://eggent.ai/docs/board.md), as a chain of steps when one needs the previous one;
- connect your own model provider or Telegram bot;
- tell you how much balance and plan time is left.

The full list of tools with their parameters is in the [agent tools reference](https://eggent.ai/docs/agent-tools.md).

## What the agent cannot do {#limits}

- **Press buttons on websites** or sign in to accounts: there is no browser with a screen.
- **See your computer**: it works only inside its workspace. Upload files to it, or [sync with your computer](https://eggent.ai/docs/file-sync.md).
- **Work without a model**: every step costs tokens. Light tasks are cheaper in a [light chat mode](https://eggent.ai/docs/chats.md#modes).
- **Guarantee the truth**: the agent can be wrong, like a person. Check figures that go into contracts and reports, and ask it to cite sources.
